The new Volvo S90 is a masterclass in Swedish ingenuity. It combines impressive performance with excellent fuel economy, a spacious interior, a generous equipment list and athletic good looks to create Volvo’s most exciting executive saloon ever.
The S90 is a car you’ll be proud to show off and it’s bound to attract envious glances. Volvo’s new trademark ‘Thor’s hammer’ headlights sit astride a wide, concave grille, while a long bonnet and low roofline suggest power and grace. Volvo’s familiar sculpted shoulder line makes an appearance too, bookended at the tail by C-shaped rear lights.
The S90 also befits from alloy wheels. Entry-level Momentum models sit on gorgeous seven-spoke 17-inch alloys, while the Inscription trim upgrades this to 18-inch diamond-cut wheels.
Even before you start the engine, it is clear that the new Volvo S90 has been designed for comfort. Volvo’s famously comfortable seats electrically adjust for height and lumbar support, which makes achieving the perfect driving position simple, and the dashboard controls are gently angled towards the driver. The S90 is an extremely refined car, cosseting you and your passengers from engine, road and wind noise so that you all arrive at your destination feeling refreshed, even after long drives.
Meticulous Scandinavian craftsmanship and attention to detail is evident throughout, from the rare Nordic timber in the top-spec Inscription trim’s dashboard, to the tiny Swedish flags stitched into the sides of the standard-fit leather seats.
The 500-litre boot can carry a pair of large suitcases with room to spare, and is a usefully square shape, so it should swallow a set of golf clubs with ease. Should you need to carry larger or awkwardly-shaped items at any point, just split and fold the rear seats.
Pilot Assist automatically maintains a set speed or distance to the car in front, as well as giving gentle steering inputs to keep you properly aligned within your lane markings.
The 360˚ camera option makes parking and low-speed manoeuvring in narrow places a simple operation, providing a bird’s eye view of everything surrounding the car on the centre display.
Park Assist is like having your own personal valet to park your car for you perfectly. It works out whether a space is large enough, then takes over the steering to guide you into it.
The new Volvo S90 detects pedestrians, cyclists and – a world first – large animals in the road, like deer. Your car will warn you, and if necessary, brake if you don’t intervene.
You’ll no longer need to think about when to switch between low and high beam, as active high beam automatically reacts to oncoming cars.
With Volvo’s City Safety technology, your car can work out whether there’s a collision risk if you’re approaching slower moving or stationary vehicles from behind.
Performance and Economy
Volvo’s philosophy of keeping things simple is evident in the engine range. No mass of confusing options here: simply choose one of two four-cylinder, 2.0-litre diesel engines. The D4, with 187bhp, will easily catapult you to motorway speeds and emits just 116g/km of CO2.
Meanwhile, the 232bhp D5 with Power Pulse technology provides high performance from low revs and through the gears, thanks to 450Nm of torque, and features four-wheel drive to help you get all of that power onto the road with the minimum of fuss.
A petrol-electric hybrid offering explosive acceleration and even lower emissions, badged T8, will be launched later in 2016.
Safety and Technology
Volvo’s reputation for innovation in the field of safety is continued with the S90. Adaptive cruise control automatically maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front on motorway journeys, while the incredible Autopilot feature helps you to manoeuvre the car effortlessly in city traffic.
The standard emergency city braking system is also innovative, recognising large animals, pedestrians and cyclists as well as other cars. Your S90 will also feature lane assist, which stops you drifting out of your lane, as well as road-sign recognition that displays the current speed limit next to the speedometer.
The list of standard technology is extensive. Even entry-level Momentum models come with satellite navigation and rear parking sensors, Bluetooth connectivity and a DAB digital radio.
The S90 includes Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system, featuring a nine-inch tablet-style touchscreen that makes it easier for everyone to control many of the car’s functions than the confusing rotary dials found in competitors’ vehicles. Upgrade to the Inscription trim to increase this to a 12.3-inch display.
